Sodium and Potassium Handling
Yang Chul-Woo

Abstract
Understanding of electrolyte imbalance is an important for neurologists since this entity is closely associated with life-threatening events in clinical practice. I¡¯d like to address representative case of electrolyte imbalance focused on sodium and potassium. To correct sodium imbalance effectively, neurologists should have knowledge of meaning of plasma sodium, correction methods and choice of fluid. For potassium imbalance, neurologists must understand the risk factors of hyperkalemia, changes of electrocardiogram and emergency treatment of hyperkalemia. Clinicians also should pay attention to using angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockade since these drugs are prone to develop hyperkalemia.
